A Modern Moment

Embroiled in the rhythms of our everyday, where methods of procrastination multiply amid ever-escalating measures of efficiency and success, it is so easy to forget to pause, take a breath and smell the roses.

Embroiled in the rhythms of our everyday, where methods of procrastination multiply amid ever-escalating measures of efficiency and success, it is so easy to forget to pause, take a breath and smell the roses. On our cyclical hamster wheel of gratification and goal-chasing, the miraculous hidden within the mundane becomes lost – we float past each other, past the beauty of natural and man-made wonders, and somewhere in-between, we become estranged from ourselves too. Kierkegaard once contemplated that our greatest cause of unhappiness “is to be busy – to be a man who is brisk about his food and work.” In a similar vein, Annie Dillard writes that “the life of sensation is the life of greed; it requires more and more. The life of the spirit requires less and less; time is ample and its passage sweet.” Which is to say, a life focused on chasing and consuming is not sustainable, requiring more for the same, if not less, satisfaction. In our modern lives, perhaps we should focus then on finding time to slow down and re-awaken our lost appreciation for the delighting mystery of being alive.

In collaboration with Matin, we invite you to explore the sweetness of a single unhurried moment.
